Preheating our Sun Oven

Don't miss your chance to win an All American Sun Oven.....

But first let me tell you about my experience using the Sun Oven in the Philippines.

My wife (we recently married this month) comes from a village in the Philippines that was devastated by an earthquake a little over a year ago.  Because of her experience surviving the earthquake, and because of where she lives, she not only has a new-found interest in preparedness, but she also happens to live in a community where unique products like the Sun Oven could be a life changer in terms of preparedness, health, safety, sustainability and economic benefit.   When I first showed her this amazing oven her first impressions were "oh wow, people could really use that here."

In most rural areas of the Philippines the number one method of cooking is with wood or charcoal.  In the U.S. we usually tend to think of cooking with wood or charcoal as something for occasional outdoor cooking, grilling, bar-b-que or when we go camping.  But in the Philippines, cooking with wood or charcoal (or even gas if they can afford it), in many cases, is the method that is used all day, every day, especially in large families and is often times done indoors.  With a lack of safety standards and building codes in comparison to the U.S., you can imagine the danger that is posed when cooking with combustibles indoors.  But not just safety, consider also the health risks as many people do not even have overhead vents or fans to adequately remove smoke.

My wife cooking hotdogs on the Sun Oven grill

The Sun Oven eliminates the possibility of burning your home down.  There is no electricity, no gas, and no combustibles used to cook with.  There is no smoke that can be inhaled, which eliminates the health hazard, and there is zero carbon footprint.  Not only that, as long as you have sun, then it costs nothing to cook.  The savings alone can be of huge benefit, especially when living in a poor community.

My wife used the Sun Oven for the first time last month and she was amazed at how easy it was to set up and use.  Because the inside ambient temperature is the same throughout the Sun Oven, it is nearly impossible to burn your food.  You don't have to worry about stirring or rotating your food all the time.  In the photo here we are cooking hotdogs.  We did not even have to turn the hotdogs to prevent them from burning.  After about 15 minutes of cooking, the hotdogs were evenly and thoroughly cooked all the way with no burn spots or any sign of overcooking.  The taste was far superior to a microwave, and in my opinion, even better than using a conventional grill with wood or charcoal.
